Case Kontula: What is important and worth preserving at Kontula Mall?

In November and December 2021, we asked the entrepreneurs of Kontula’s shopping mall what they think is important or worth preserving. This is how they answered:

Participants’ answers to the question of what is important and worth preserving in Kontula Mall.

Almost every respondent marked their own business on the map. Many of the businesses have been in the mall for a long time and hope to continue to be there. Businesses are important for many reasons. They are a source of income and provide services that customers need. Entrepreneurs have invested in business premises.

The Kontula Mall is a good location for businesses. Many hope that the existing buildings and commercial premises will be retained. The metro station was highlighted as important because it provides easy access for customers to Kontula Mall. The mall is perceived to be a convenient size.

The multiculturalism of the Kontula mall was raised as an important issue to be preserved. For example, the prayer room was marked as a very important place. On the other hand, for entrepreneurs, multiculturalism means having customers.

Respondents consider restaurants and cafés to be an important part of the culture of a place and the encounter between cultures. In one response, the culture of Kontula is summed up in helping others. They hope to preserve the atmosphere, the ”vibe” of the place.

Public services, especially the library, are highly valued. The library was seen both as a place for reading and learning and as a place where different people can meet and be. The health centre and sports facilities also received high marks. The pharmacy, post office, children’s playground and Symppis (day centre for substance abuse and mental health clients) also received some mentions. Both ethnic grocery stores and large markets were perceived as important.
